Let’s throw an onion in our socks!

Yes, you read that correctly. I’m talking about the onion sock remedy.

I’m all about natural remedies, and if I’ve got nothing to lose, then I’ll give them a shot.

So, here’s how I found out about this and how my experiment worked out.

On Easter Sunday I had to work, and it wasn’t what I expected. Usually when I work on a holiday, it’s a pretty easy day, but this holiday was different. First, I was moving extremely heavy displays around for an hour and for the rest of my shift I was lifting and opening boxes.

Needless to say I was sore and exhausted, and I hurt my right forearm. Right after work I had to rush to my boyfriend’s parents house where we ate and played games with the kids for the rest of the day. I also played with the cat (I’m allergic to them, but I love them!). My left cheek, neck and chest broke out in a rash.

When I got home, I went onto Skype with my mum. Naturally I told her I was tired. She went on to tell me that she’s been doing the onion sock remedy and that it’s really been working. Usually she has really sore feet and her back hurts. She said since she’s been doing it, she hasn’t had any pain.

That night before bed I did some research, and read other people’s experiences with it. People reported feeling a change right away; the one that stuck out most was that it apparently takes away allergies.

So, the whole idea behind this is because onions absorb bacteria.

My boyfriend and I tried it the next night. He said he felt great the next morning. I myself didn’t see much of a difference. I still had as much mucus as I usually do in the mornings, my feet didn’t feel any better (but they were softer) and my eyelids were super itchy (they usually are in the morning – thanks to my ‘lovely’ allergies).

On the bright side my mucus stopped before it usually does throughout the day.

I tried it again the next night, with less results. My eyelids were even itchier the next day, plus my feet hurt and I just all around wasn’t feeling my best.

The point of this post, if you were wondering what it is – give things a try. Sometimes they’ll work out and sometimes they won’t. If there’s no loss factor it’s a no brainer.

Another reason I made this post is because all the posts I read were positive, so I thought I’d give my take on things, since the results were different for me.

Also the other posts I found on this remedy didn’t give you the down points. So here they are,

  • Your bed will smell like onion all night
  • The onion is wet – I suggest you dab it with a paper towel to get some of the moister out.
  • Once the onion is in your socks it’s kind of odd to walk around, but you do have to walk because you have to wash your hands after handling the onion – my suggestion is to wear gloves so you don’t need to go wash your hands.

In conclusion, it worked for my mum and for my boyfriend. For me, I did not see any noticeable difference. I am willing to give it another shot though.
